Carey Hagan

Awarded her Master of Science in Library and Information Science in 2004, Carey Hagan is presently employed as a level-one Librarian at Fairfax County Public Library in Fairfax, Virginia. Before embarking on her career in information science, Ms. Hagan taught English for seven years at several high schools and middle schools in the states of Virginia and New Jersey.

While an undergraduate student at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Carey Hagan double-majored in English language and literature and Russian language and literature. Her academic performance during these years earned her a place in the Phi Beta Kappa Honors Thesis Program and a valuable opportunity to study abroad at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Ms. Hagan graduated with dual Bachelor of Arts in 1991.

In 2002, Carey Hagan returned to academia to pursue her graduate-level library studies at the Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, D.C. At the end of her Master of Science program, Ms. Hagan undertook a critical internship with the United States Library of Congress. Working in the agency’s Technical Processing and Automation Instruction Office (TPAIO), she taught a course entitled “FirstSearch: Using the Web-based OCLC Service.” Ms. Hagan also assisted staff in the redesign of several additional classes on the TPAIO database and research. After graduation, she remained active at her CUA alma mater for years as a part-time cataloguer for the Mullen Library.

Carey Hagan joined the staff of the Fairfax County Public Library in 2006, where she splits her time between the library’s reference and children’s departments. Ms. Hagan stays up to date with the latest developments in her field as an active member of the American Library Association and the Young Adult Library Services Association.
